To the Editor:
What a breath of fresh air greeted readers with the headline, “Legislators opt out of pensions.”
Kudos to state Reps. David McSweeney and Barbara Wheeler. Thank you, David and Barbara, for doing what all elected officials should do if they have sought the office to help the people they represent more than to help themselves.
If elected officials seek their election so they can have a full-time part-time job, it is my opinion that they certainly were entertaining misguided reasons for seeking the office.
Hopefully, we’ll soon be able to read of legislation being proposed that will allow all misguided and other elected officials (but especially those who view such action as truly important to their constituents) to opt out of Illinois’ General Assembly Retirement System, even after the initial 24 months of being elected.
This certainly would represent a token of good faith to help reduce future costs to the Illinois taxpayers.
