San Diego Padres manager Bud Black said after Friday’s game in Atlanta that Hampshire graduate Jake Goebbert will be optioned to Triple-A El Paso, ending what was just over a month-long stint in the major leagues.

The Northwestern standout was recalled from Triple-A El Paso and made his debut on June 20 with an RBI-single. In 22 games for the Padres, he batted .250 and had an on base percentage of .333 in 48 at bats.

He increased his chances of a long-term future with the club by proving versitility. He played first base and the corner outfield position in the big leagues. However, in some ways the move was inevitable.

The 26-year-old was promoted to the big leagues after 5-year veteran Yonder Alonso went on the disabled list with right wrist tendinitis.

Throughout the 3-game series at Wrigley Field this week, Padres manager Bud Black hinted that the Cuban-born player’s return was imminent, saying it was “on the horizon.”

Goebbert acknowledged that staying in the majors wasn’t completely based on his performance before Thursday’s game by saying, “Sticking here, that’s not necessarily all in my control.”

In 63 games in the minors this season, Goebbert is batting .264 with 24 extra base hits, including 11 home runs. He also walked 39 times to boost his on base percentage to .337.

Black said Goebbert learned a great deal during his time in the major leagues. During the series in Chicago he said, “I hope there’s a lot of games in front of him. He’s a good kid. I like him.”
