Guatemala-to-Illinois express

To the Editor:

It takes a team to put together an illegal immigrant express trip from Central America to Illinois and, sadly, kids ride for free. Here’s how it works:

• Illegal migrants from Guatemala, Belize and other Central American countries can cross into Mexico at 12 Care Centers for Border Transit. They are issued a visitor’s card that assures passage via train or bus to the U. S. border.

• The Obama Administration and a group of U.S. Senators, including our own Dick Durbin, have taken a series of actions that have created an open border with Mexico. For example, they have defunded the fence to be built across our 2,000-mile southern border and passed laws that have made it very difficult to deport illegal aliens. They will tell you the border is secure, but Janet Napolitano’s “electronic fence” lies rusting in the desert and illegal border crossers now “surrender to” U.S. immigration agents.

• Federal agencies are looking for places to warehouse this latest wave of illegal immigrants. Illinois, which Gov. Pat Quinn has declared a sanctuary state, has taken in over 500 kids and adults, and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel is making arrangements for another 1,000.

So, it’s a perfect team effort that will further stretch our social services and add thousands to our unemployment rolls. Based on Chicago Board of Health data, you also can expect new cases of tuberculosis, measles, pneumonia and Swine Flu in a neighborhood near you.
