Festival at Main Beach offers games, treasure hunt

Offers funseekers games, treasure hunt at CL Main Beach

CRYSTAL LAKE – Five-year-old Harper Keck swung the blue bag filled with the spoils of an afternoon treasure hunt back and forth.

She had uncovered candy, toys and gold dollar coins in the sand at Crystal Lake’s Main Beach, one of the activities being offered by businesses and organizations as part of the Crystal Lake Park District and Black Diamond-sponsored Blast at the Beach event.

Employees of a chiropractic business oversaw a putting green.

A game of bags was in swing across the way at a radio station’s tent. An abbreviated tennis court staffed by the Crystal Lake Park District’s Racket Club gave kids a chance to practice their swings.

Harper Keck and her little sister, Charlotte, 3, come to the beach a lot, at least once a week for the free concerts, said their parents, Phillip and Kristen Keck.

“They just love playing in the sand and splashing in the water, just relaxing,” Kristen Keck said. “And it’s a nice view.”

Plenty of families were out enjoying the weather, taking advantage of the free admission to the beach and enjoying the activities laid out Saturday afternoon.

Families set up camp with blankets and chairs. Kids tried their hand at the games or milking a fake cow. Couples strolled through the craft vendors, selling crocheted hats and handmade jewelry.

Penny and Bill Gast of Wonder Lake relaxed in the shade overlooking the beach waiting for the band to start.

“We like to go to all the festivals in the county,” Penny Gast said. “That’s what summer is all about.”

Lisa Crizer enjoyed the event last year so she made sure her mother, sister and nephews came up from Bensenville for it, she said.

She brought her two daughters, Harper, 7, and Violet, 3.

“After our snack, we’re going to go to the beach,” she said as she stood in line for nachos and a hot dog. “They’ve been begging to go.”
