Need compassion in church

Published: Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014 5:30 a.m. CST

To the Editor:

I am deeply saddened by the continued punitive behavior of Cardinal Francis George.

His autocratic style destroyed our former pastor, Pat Brennan, and now this. The cardinal chooses to perpetuate a church of rules rather than a church of compassion. These are tumultuous times in the church and instead of following the lead of our pope to exercise love and compassion for all, we revert to punitive, exclusionary thinking and actions.

Cardinal George kept Daniel McCormack in ministry when he was a sex offender and even promoted him.

Where were the rules then?

Now, a gifted and incredibly talented man, Holy Family Catholic music director Colin Collette, is punished because he exercised his conscience (which is church teaching) and is terminated.

When will pastors and the people demand a church of compassion rather than a church of rules that doesn’t fit the lifestyle of any man or woman?
