Thriving Lions Club

To the Editor:

Crystal Lake has a 60-member-strong, thriving Lions Club that has been serving Crystal lake for 85 years.

You might know us from the 20 Lions proudly carrying out a huge U.S. flag in the Crystal Lake parades. On July 4, there were 20 more of us staging, directing and lining up the parade. Or maybe you see us on Candy Days, trading candy for donations. The money you throw in the bucket stays in Crystal Lake.

We have locations around town where you can drop used eyeglasses or hearing aids. We collect them, have them refurnished and put back to use.

The electronic sign on the Chamber of Commerce property is ours, built and paid for with Lions Club work. It generates income that helps our neighbors with scholarships, children’s hearing and eye tests and many other worthwhile city causes. In addition, it is available for Amber alerts or any other crisis the police or fire department deem necessary.

When you hear about a charity today, your first question is, what percent is to “do good” and what percentage is for “overhead.” I have been a Lion for five years and, so far, it is “do good” 100 percent, “overhead” zero. We plan on keeping that ratio.

If you’re interested in a little work, a little participation, a lot of fun and a chance to feel really good about yourself, we meet the second and fourth Monday night of every month.

If interested, contact me: Bob Jarvis, 815-648-2401 or rjarvis@perfectshutters.com.

Bob Jarvis

President, Crystal Lake Lions Club
