You’ve just handed over the vast majority of your hard earned assets to someone else to manage. Should you be concerned? Have you researched your broker or financial advisor? Have you asked for and called their references? Look for indicators of professionalism, especially ethics and excellence. Look them up on www.ethics.net . If they claim to do “Financial Planning” go to www.cfp.com and also www.fpa.com because Certified Financial Planners™ are the only ones that should be claiming to offer Financial Planning. Check out the American College ( www.theamericancollege.edu ) to see if they have earned any professional designations such as ChFC ( Chartered Financial Consultant ) or CLU ( Chartered Life Underwriter ). Because they possibly have a designation or two does not provide any guarantees but it definitely establishes some level of training, ethics and professionalism. Be careful if they are claiming to do something they are not authorized or licensed to do. Find out how long they have been in business – longevity… because the longer they have been in business; the less likely they are doing something wrong or illegal. Are they a Registered Representative or a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA)? Check out their history on www.finra.org .
What financial products are they recommending and what is your tolerance for risk? Did they even ask! Do these products fit with your goals and dreams of a safe and secure retirement? Can you do research on their recommendations? Will they give you any references of others they have positioned with these product recommendations so that you can do some of your own due diligence? Remember… It’s your money, NOT theirs! The only person that is truly looking out for your best interests is YOU. Put our S.W.A.N. Technique to work on your behalf and we’ll help you too, Sleep Well At Night.
