Corporate patriotism

To the Editor:

President Obama has coined a new phrase in his attempt to divide the nation even more than he already has and draw the Democrats to the polls this fall: economic patriotism.

He is highly critical of corporations legally (emphasis on legally) moving their headquarters overseas in their attempt to avoid the highest corporate taxes in the world. He must be very proud of the way Sen. Dick Durbin bullied Walgreens into keeping its headquarters here.

If our government leaders prefer that businesses not use loopholes to avoid high taxes, I suggest they overhaul the tax code and eliminate the loopholes they inserted into the code.

It would be interesting to know how many of them refuse to use loopholes to save money themselves. To paraphrase a famous quotation, let him who doesn’t use any loopholes cast the first stone.
