Mike French knows decking. He knows it so well that he opened his decking center during the height of the Great Recession. The business has thrived for eight years and even expanded from its Montgomery location to a second facility in St. Charles.

Now, Mike’s Deck Center has joined the Hines Supply family of building supplies.

“We’re a subsidiary of Hines Outdoor Living Center,” said French, now location manager for the two facilities.

French brought with him his formula for success.

“We cater to homeowners, the do-it-yourselfers,” French said. “They can come to us for expert advice and a large selection of products. We have 3D design available and we have everything on display so they can touch them and see the actual colors.

“We work with a lot of contractors also because we stock the majority of what we sell,” French said, explaining that availability onsite is a major factor because colors don’t often show true on the Internet or even in brochures.

“We handle all the top brands,” French said. “We’re the largest stocking dealer in the Chicagoland area.”

In fact, Hines will be expanding its decking materials into its other four showrooms in the coming months, French said.

“Most people want low maintenance today,” French said. “They don't mind cleaning but don't want to have to do the staining, sealing and sanding. They also want the colors to stay consistent and that's what our products do.

“We’re here to help the one-man operation and we’re here to help the operation that’s got 25 builders,” French said. “ We built our business on a high level of service at a fair price. That’s what makes us work.”
