Union man dies in morning car vs. bus crash

UNION – Investigators are trying to determine why a Union man crossed the centerline Monday morning and collided with a school bus in a crash that apparently killed him.

Evan C. Peterson, 24, of Union, was driving a Ford Focus east on Coral Road when he crossed the centerline for unknown reasons and struck the school bus going west. No children were on the bus at the time of the crash.

Peterson was pronounced dead at the scene, the McHenry County Sheriff's Office said. McHenry County Coroner Dr. Anne Majewski said the time of Peterson's death was 6:46 a.m.

The driver of the school bus, Jean C. Wittlief, 66, of Union, was taken to Centegra Hospital – Woodstock after the crash, a fire official said. Wittlief was treated and released.

There were no other occupants in either vehicle involved in the crash, sheriff's office officials said.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts and the airbags in the Ford Focus did deploy, the sheriff's office said.

The Marengo Fire Protection District responded shortly before 7 a.m. Monday to the crash in the 17200 block of East Coral Road in Union, according to the initial reports from the department.

The accident remains under investigation by the sheriff's office and the coroner's office. Coroner's office investigators will perform toxicology tests as is routine following fatal crashes.
