McHENRY – Proceeds from an upcoming fundraiser will go toward helping those living paycheck to paycheck, helping avert eviction or utility shutoffs.

The annual Friends of the Poor Walk held by the St. Vincent de Paul Society of McHenry will start at 9 a.m. Sept. 27 at Veteran's Memorial Park, 3400 Pearl St., McHenry. Registration will begin at 8 a.m.

Refreshments and entertainment will be provided until noon.

The society provides assistance to families who reach out to it and area churches, and 100 percent of the walk's proceeds will go toward that assistance.

Over the first six months of this year, the all-volunteer society provided financial assistance to 283 households, or nearly 800 people; distributed more than 4,000 pounds of food and helped sponsor the Northern Illinois Food bank mobile throughout the year.

Early registration can be completed at www.svdpfriendsofthepoorwalk.org. Information about participating walkers and how to sponsor them also is available at the site.
