Prairie Ridge volleyball sweeps Lake Zurich

LAKE ZURICH – The Prairie Ridge volleyball team earned their first win of the season Tuesday night with a 2-0 win at Lake Zurich.

After making quick work of the Bears in the first match (25-18), the Wolves found themselves down 8-5 early in the second match. However, after regrouping during a timeout, the Wolves earned a commanding 25-15 victory.

"We made too many errors for our setters to get into our system," said Prairie Ridge coach Stefanie Otto, who is entering her 18th season as head coach. "They needed to settle down and not get too worried about what was happening out there. But, once we started to pull the ball off the net a little bit, they got right back into the system again."

Leading the charge for Wolves was senior middle blocker Ali Witt, who came up with five total kills in the game.

"I told the girls to keep up the momentum and only focus on our side," Witt said. "We needed to focus on our errors and try not to give them anything to give them more energy."

The home fans helped the Bears' energy as they moved into an early lead in the second, but the Wolves shut them out and went on a 14-point run to give them the victory.

Helping with that momentum shift up front for the Wolves was senior middle back Aubree Eggers. Her defensive presence at the net and her five attacks helped shift the energy and prevented the Bears from pulling out of reach.

Looking forward, the Wolves will incorporate their mixed roster of seniors with fresh new faces.

"I really enjoy being with this group of girls. I want to see a lot of growth with them," Otto said. "I want them to push themselves to do things they didn't think they were capable of doing."

If the Wolves are looking to go deep into the postseason, they will need their seniors to step up and help develop the roster.

"I'm looking forward to playing with these girls," Witt said. "I want to do well in conference play. We have a lot of potential here and I'm really excited."

Next up on the Wolves' schedule is their home opener at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday against Jacobs.
