LAKE IN THE HILLS – With slow winter season approaching, Kona Ice of McHenry County owner Sherry Ravagnie is bringing her mobile shaved ice truck business inside.
Ravagnie, who started the state's first Kona Ice franchise in 2012, has created a Kona Ice party room, called Gooba Jooba Island, at 8485 Pyott Road, in front of the Lake in the Hills Airport.
The 1,800-square-foot space was initially a garage for the company's mobile Kona Ice truck and other equipment, but Ravagnie has transformed it into a space for children's birthday parties with a play area and party room.
Lexi Mangieri, a recent Jacobs High School graduate, painted the party room with images of cartoon penguins, tikis and island landscapes.
Because the Kona Ice mobile trucks aren't used in the winter, the Gooba Jooba Island was created as an indoor alternative.
"We're just trying to give people another option," said Ravagnie, who owns the business with her husband, Scott.
Gooba Jooba Island will be open Saturdays and Sundays for birthday parties for children 5 to 8 years old in groups of up to 15. Prices for the 90-minute parties start at $225. The facility will not offer retail sales.
