CRYSTAL LAKE – The chance to wield a pickleball paddle is being offered at the Crystal Lake Park District's Racket Club.
Pickleball, a cross between tennis and ping pong, is played on a smaller court than racket ball and with a wooden paddle and a plastic ball similar to a whiffle ball.
It has picked up popularity in part because of its scaled-down court dimensions, which are more manageable for seniors, the park district said in a news release.
The Racket Club will be hosting a Pickleball Night 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at the club, which is located at 9101 S. Route 31 in Algonquin.
The cost is $5 and a membership to the Racket Club is not required. The fee includes instruction, equipment and games at all levels.
Additional games are available 2 to 3:30 p.m. Mondays, noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays, 7:30 to 9 a.m. Fridays, and 3 to 5 p.m. Saturdays on a RSVP basis. These games are generally at an intermediate level though newcomers are welcome.
The cost is $4 for members and $5 for nonmembers. Equipment is provided to those that need it.
To reserve a spot at either the Pickleball Night or on a RSVP-basis, contact Club Manager Rob Laue at 847-658-5688.
