Algonquin man, 75, sentenced for soliciting sex act from young girl

WOODSTOCK – An Algonquin man admitted to soliciting a sex act from a young girl, and received six months of probation.

The case against Lawrence M. Chamness, 75, was set for trial Monday, but he instead entered a guilty plea to soliciting a sex act from a minor.

Chamness could have been sentenced to up to three years in prison on the Class 4 felony, but prosecutors opted to seek non-reporting probation.

McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Combs said Chamness had no previous criminal history, and there was no physical harm to the victim.

In August 2013, Chamness had offered the girl, whom he had known through a church, $15 to touch his genitals, Combs said.

According to an application for an order of protection filed in McHenry County, Chamness also had taken the girl horseback riding, and had offered her books about horses and jewelry.

As a condition of the plea, Chamness will be required to register as a sex offender for 10 years.

The guilty plea was accepted by McHenry County Judge Sharon Prather.
