CRYSTAL LAKE – Prom still is a while away, but an opportunity to find an affordable dress is coming up in less than a month.
My Sister’s Dress, an annual event that sells gently used prom dresses and accessories, will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 7 at Sage YMCA, 701 Manor Road, Crystal Lake. The event is sponsored by Star 105.5.
All dresses are sold for $25 and all jewelry, purses and other accessories for $5. The money raised – typically about $3,500 is raised each year – is gifted to Big Brothers Big Sisters of McHenry County, said Lake in the Hills resident Emily Smith, co-founder and chairwoman for the event.
This year, there is sure to be an abundance of available dresses, she added.
“The last two years, we’ve gotten about 1,000 donated dresses,” Smith said. “We usually have hundreds of dresses leftover, though, which all go to Home of the Sparrow.”
She said she’s hoping to reduce the amount of leftovers, emphasizing the event is open to all high school girls, not just those needing to shop on a budget.
Like in previous years, the event this year will feature a wide variety of raffles and prizes from limo rides to a spa package to a teeth whitening basket, Smith said.
Donated dresses will be accepted up until the day of the event. Drop-off locations include Sage YMCA; Taylor Stevens Salon and Spa, 1940 S. Randall Road, Algonquin; McHenry County College, 8900 Route 14, Crystal Lake; the Star 105.5 radio station, 8800 Route 14, Crystal Lake; and four American Community Bank and Trust locations. Those locations include 381 S. Main St., Crystal Lake; 1290 Lake Ave., Woodstock; 1500 Route 31, McHenry; and 10101 Route 47, Huntley.
