Northwest Herald wins 11 journalism awards from Illinois Associated Press

CRYSTAL LAKE – The Northwest Herald won 11 awards in the annual Illinois Associated Press Media Editors contest in its division of newspapers.

The editorial staff captured a first-place award in Digital Storytelling for its project “Football 101,” which examined different aspects of the game.

Former reporter Shawn Shinneman won a first-place award in Investigative Reporting for his work covering Hebron Village President John Jacobson.

Photographer Sarah Nader took first place in the Portrait/Personality category.
Sports reporter Mike DeFabo won a first-place award in the Sports Feature category for coverage of Marengo football players.

Former reporters Tom Musick and Jeff Arnold won first place in Sports Breaking News for coverage of Johnsburg’s C.J. Fiedorowicz’s selection in the NFL draft. Musick also received a first-place award in the Sports Column or Blog category.

DeFabo, sports reporter Joe Stevenson and former sports reporter Joey Kaufman received second place in Sports Breaking News.

The editorial staff won a third-place award in the Enterprise Series category for its five-day series “Changing Faces” that explored changing demographics in McHenry County. Senior Digital Editor John Sahly also won a third-place award in the Informational Graphic category.

Kaufman won third-place awards in Enterprise Story and Sports Feature.
