Pedestrian hit by vehicle in Route 47 crash in Woodstock

WOODSTOCK –  Police said the weather and visibility appear to have been factors in a Woodstock crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, who fire officials said suffered serious injuries.

The Woodstock Police Department responded about 9:40 a.m. Monday to the 100 block of Route 47 just north of East Calhoun Street, according to a department news release.

Officers found a 64-year-old man from Woodstock in the center median with visible injuries to his head, police said. The driver, a 78-year-old man, was uninjured, police added.

Woodstock Fire/Rescue District Capt. Karen Bush said crews took the pedestrian in serious condition to Centegra Hospital – Woodstock, and as of Monday afternoon, Deputy Police Chief John Lieb said investigators who went to the hospital were led to believe the pedestrian would survive.

The man, who suffered a concussion and numerous broken bones, will stay in the hospital for further treatment and observation, according to the release.

Police briefly closed Route 47 while the Major Crash Assistance Team investigated. The investigation found that the pedestrian apparently was crossing Route 47 heading west, while the driver was heading northbound.

The weather appears to have played a role, police said.

Lieb said he believed it was raining at the time of the crash.

Lieb would not identify those involved, saying at this point no citations have been issued, but the investigation will continue.
