Marengo firefighters extinguish car fire on Route 176

MARENGO – Route 176 was briefly shut down Saturday as Marengo firefighters extinguished a fully involved car fire, a fire official said.

Marengo Fire Protection District Lt. Mark Pankow said no one was injured when a Buick Century went up in flames about 5 p.m. Saturday.

The car was headed west on Route 176 east of Deer Pass Road, and everyone in the car was able to safely get outside when it pulled to the side of the road, Pankow said.

It took longer than usual to put out of the fire because of a fuel leak, he said. Pankow was not sure what caused the car to start on fire.
