HUNTLEY – For the better part of a decade, Huntley’s girls were close to the McHenry County Track and Field championship, only to have first Crystal Lake South, then Cary-Grove standing in the way.

Red Raiders coach Shawn Nordeen remembers losing by three-quarters of a point a few years ago and figures their second-place finishes number in double digits.

There was no denying Huntley on Friday night at their own Red Raider Stadium. The Raiders showed depth, won three of four relays and grabbed their first county title in school history.

Huntley finished with 128 points, 20 ahead of six-time champ C-G in second place. McHenry was third with 98.

“We had a lot of girls score more points than we thought we would get,” Nordeen said. “We probably lost about 80 points from last year [to graduation]. We knew [as coaches] we had a lot of instructing to do with this group. There were a lot of learning curves, so for us this is nice to see.”

The Raiders started the night with Kate Mitchell, Chloe Smith, Kiera Daly and Mary Raclawski setting a meet record at 9:42.90 in the 4x800-meter relay.

“It was awesome, we all did amazing,” Mitchell said. “Especially to see a freshman like Mary step it up in the anchor leg. We needed to trust each other and know our plan and what we were going to do.”

Sophomore Cassidy Lackovic then anchored the Raiders’ winning 4x100 team with Nicole Zielinski, Alex Handchetz and Alyssa Bushman. The Raiders finished the meet with a win in the 4x400 with Bushman, Ola Oladipo, Daly and Mitchell running.

Crystal Lake South’s Caitlin Bruzzini won the 3,200 and 1,600 races. South’s Cailey Ciezadlo won the 200 and anchored the Gators’ winning 4x200 team with Courtney Wosik, Naomi Daniel and Mallory Ellers.

Woodstock had two champs in senior Grace Beattie (800) and freshman Syd Heidtke (300 low hurdles). Beattie, who will run at Illinois State, has had a breakthrough season as a senior.

“I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been,” she said. “I didn’t play basketball this winer. I needed to focus on one sport. I thought I’d focus on the 800, I’ve always done the 300 hurdles since I was a freshman.”

UNSUNG HERO

Syd Heidtke

Woodstock, Freshman

Heidtke knocked almost two seconds off her previous best time with a 47.70 to win the 300-meter low hurdles at the McHenry County Track and Field Meet.

THE NUMBER 4

Champions for team winner Huntley, which won three of the four relays and has sopohomore Cassidy Lackovic win the 100.

AND ANOTHER THING ...

Jacobs’ Caliegh Walsh and Rachel Holstein finished 1-2 in the 100 high hurdles. Walsh nearly had two county titles as she tied with Prairie Ridge’s Natasha Schaffer with the best long jump at 17-11 1/4, but Schaffer won with a better second jump.
