Man who shot himself in Woodstock was assisting concealed carry class, police say

Skokie man believed handgun malfunctioned, McHenry County Sheriff's deputy says

WOODSTOCK – The man who accidentally shot himself in the hand over the weekend was assisting in instructing a concealed carry course, police said Monday.

The 35-year-old Skokie man was taken to Centegra Hospital – Woodstock with injures not considered to be life-threatening after fire officials responded about 1 p.m. Sunday to the 3600 block of North Queen Anne Road, according to officials and scanner reports.

McHenry County Sheriff's Deputy Aimee Knop said the victim believed the handgun malfunctioned. She did not have information on what type of gun was involved in the incident.

No citations have been issued. Knop said the investigation is ongoing.

Sunday's shooting was the second report in less than a week of someone accidentally shooting himself in the hand in the McHenry County area.

A 74-year-old McHenry-area man was taken to the hospital Wednesday after he accidentally shot himself in the hand while taking apart 9 mm handgun, police said.

Knop said gun owners should always treat a gun as if it loaded. They should never point their gun at anything they do not intend to shoot, she advised. Finally, Knop said gun owners should keep their finger off the trigger until it is time to safely fire their gun.
