Illinois emissions testing requirement for registration renewal to resume

Drivers whose vehicles require emissions tests must again pass them before being able to renew their registration, effective June 1.

Secretary of State Jesse White announced Wednesday that he is reinstating the requirement now that the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has resumed sending out notices to motorists.

He suspended the requirement in December after the IEPA stopped sending out notices because of the ongoing state budget impasse.

Emissions testing is required of vehicles registered in southeastern McHenry County, as well as all of Cook, DuPage and Lake counties and parts of Kane, Kendall and Will counties.

McHenry County’s emissions testing facility is located at 195 Liberty Road in Crystal Lake, just southeast of the intersection of Route 14 and Main Street.
