McHENRY – Five vehicles were destroyed Thursday in a McHenry-area garage fire, a fire official said.
Nunda Rural Fire Protection District Capt. Steve Rusin said crews responded about 4:50 p.m. to the 2000 block of South Riverside Drive in unincorporated McHenry. Other area departments were called to the scene through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, Rusin said.
The garage, which was not attached to a home, was in flames when crews arrived, Rusin said. Water was brought in with tank trucks because there are no fire hydrants in the area, he said.
The garage and five vehicles inside it were completely destroyed, Rusin said, and the loss is estimated at $50,000.
A resident in the home called 911, Rusin said. The fire did not reach the home.
One Nunda firefighter suffered a minor injury, Rusin said. He could not provide further details on what the injury was or how it happened.
The cause of the fire still is under investigation, Rusin said, and believed to be accidental.
It took crews about an hour and a half to put out the fire because of the five vehicles burning, he said.
