CRYSTAL LAKE – A Lake in the Hills man faces multiple charges after allegedly causing a crash that injured another driver and damaged cars at a local dealership.

Police said that about 10:20 p.m. Friday, Mark O’Connor, 46, of the 3100 block of Brisbane Drive, was traveling east on Route 14 at a high speed when he swerved his Ford E350 cargo van into the right lane and rear-ended a Volkswagen Passat near Exchange Drive.

The Passat was forced off the road and slammed into a utility pole. O’Connor then veered into the lot of Volkswagen of Crystal Lake, 5213 Route 14, and struck a display car, pushing it several dozen feet, Deputy Chief Derek Hyrkas said.

O’Connor then veered toward the road before hitting another parked display car.

A third display car suffered minor damage from debris thrown from the Passat, Hyrkas said. The 45-year-old Passat driver was taken to Centegra Hospital – Huntley with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Damage estimates from the dealership were not available.

Police charged O’Connor with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and aggravated reckless driving, both of which are felony charges, as well as driving without insurance, failing to reduce speed and improper lane use. He is next scheduled to appear in court March 14 before McHenry County Judge Michael Feetterer.
