FIRST TEAM

Sam Spencer, Huntley, Fr., 106

The younger Spencer brother came in as a freshman and led the FVC champion Red Raiders in takedowns, team points and nearfalls, all while not giving up bonus points in any match against a tough 3A schedule. Spencer won his first 3A regional title to help Huntley take its first regional crown. He placed third at his sectional, qualifying for state as a freshman before finishing with a 39-11 record.

Jake Harrier, Jacobs, Fr., 113

Harrier finished a strong freshman season by qualifying for the 3A state tournament. He won a 3A regional and took second place at his sectional. Once he reached the 3A state tournament, Harrier didn’t medal but saw as tough of a draw as any local wrestler, his two losses coming to the eventual state champion and the third-place finisher, who was also a previous state champion. Harrier finished his freshman season with a 36-9 record.

Josh Stenger, Huntley, Sr., 120

Stenger had ups and downs as a senior but was among the state’s best at his weight all season and capped the year with a third-consecutive trip to the 3A state tournament. He took second at 3A regionals and sectionals, helping Huntley win its first FVC and regional titles. He finished the season with a 39-8 record. Stenger leaves Huntley with a career record of 157-33, including 76 pins.

Lucas Busse, McHenry, Sr., 120

Busse lost just once during a stellar regular season, dropping a decision to an eventual 2A state champion and beating the areas’s other two best 120-pounders. Busse won a 3A regional but then was eliminated at sectionals one round short of qualifying for state. He finished the season with a 36-3 record.

Joshua Fiegel, Harvard, Sr., 126

Fiegel, a three-time state qualifier, finished his career with his best state finish, placing third at 2A 126. Fiegel also won 2A regional and sectional titles. He also helped Harvard win the inaugural Kishwaukee River Conference dual meet championship. Fiegel finished the season with a 45-4 record.

Zach Spencer, Huntley, Jr., 126

Spencer was one of the Red Raiders’ most consistent wrestlers all season as they went undefeated in the area and won FVC and regional titles for the first time. Spencer won a 3A regional title and took third at sectionals, qualifying for his third consecutive trip to state where he came up one round short of medaling. He finished the year with a 41-13 record.

Anthony Randazzo, Marian Central, Jr., 132

Randazzo capped his third consecutive trip to state with a runner-up finish at 2A 132, winning his first state medal. He reached the final with a decision and two pins before losing to a former state champion and top seed in the bracket. Randazzo won 2A regional and sectional titles as well. He finished the season with a 36-7 record.

Lenny Petersen, Crystal Lake Central, Sr., 138

Petersen won his second consecutive state championship at 2A 138. He won his state matches by tech fall, fall, fall and decision. He also won 2A regional and sectional championships. He finished the year with a 40-4 record, his only losses coming to a pair of 3A state medalists. He helped Central to second place in the FVC and to the dual team state quarterfinals.

Gavin Sutton, Richmond-Burton, Sr., 145

Sutton went up a weight this year and was dominant throughout, winning his first state championship at 2A 145 after finishing runner-up last year and taking third in 2014.  Sutton won his state matches by tech fall, major decision, major decision and decision, beating the No. 1 seed, a previously undefeated wrestler, in the state final. He won 2A regional and sectional titles as well. He finished with a 43-3 record.

David Ferrante, Huntley, Fr., 152

Ferrante didn’t seem to have any trouble stepping into the lineup as a freshman, wrestling at a weight full of mostly older competition. Ferrante won 3A regional and sectional titles before placing fourth at state. He won all four regular-season tournaments he entered and helped the Red Raiders win their first FVC dual and regional titles. He finished with a 29-5 record despite missing a month with injury.

Joe Mier, Marengo, Sr., 170

Mier finished state runner-up at 2A 170, earning his first ever state medal on his third trip. He was a 2A regional and sectional champion as well. The loss the in state-title match (to an undefeated top seed) was only his second of the year as he finished 39-2. Mier was the leader of a Marengo team that took second in the KRC and he finished his high school career with 122 total wins.

Nick Fetzner, Prairie Ridge, Jr., 170

Fetzner placed third in the state at 2A 170, and in the third-place match he avenged his only loss of the tournament. He placed second at 2A regionals and sectionals, finishing the season with a 34-9 record.

Jaden Glauser, McHenry, Fr., 170

Glauser made an immediate impact as a freshman with composure beyond his years, winning his first 40 matches of the season before taking his first loss in the sectional finals (where he lost to another eventual state placer). He won a 3A regional title and took second at sectionals before placing fourth at state. He finished the year 44-3.

Chase Raap, Dundee-Crown, Sr., 182

Raap capped his high school career by reaching state for the first time and once there he placed sixth in the state at 3A 182. He won a 3A regional and finished runner-up at sectionals. He finished with a 43-11 record on the season.
