Letters to the Editor

Letter: April is Autism Awareness Month

To the Editor:

Alexander Leigh Center for Autism (ALCA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, full-day, year-round Therapeutic Day School approved by the Illinois State Board of Education. ALCA serves 3 to 21-year-olds with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), OHI, multiple disabilities, developmental delay and/or intellectual disability. Our students require a more intensive placement to meet their educational needs.

Did you know that ALCA is located in Crystal Lake, currently serving 43 students from six counties, including Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will, and is growing to clear our wait list and eventually serve 65 students? Each student receives 1:1 instruction and the support necessary to work toward achieving their goals as outlined in their Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

You may have seen our ALCA bus transporting our students on field trips focusing on life skills, traveling to their job placement locations or to participate in a community volunteer activity.

April is Autism Awareness Month. Autism spectrum disorder is a complex neuro-biological condition that affects a person’s ability to communicate, form social relationships, and is accompanied by behavioral challenges. The most recent statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) show 1 in 68 American children as being diagnosed on the autism spectrum.

On behalf of the students, teachers and staff of Alexander Leigh Center for Autism, I want to thank the McHenry County community for your acceptance of our students and continued support of our school! The families appreciate your generosity and kindness.
