To the Editor:
Earlier this week, I marched with Planned Parenthood in Springfield to support equal rights for women, all women. It is unbelievable that in 2017 women still have to fight to be treated as equals. I thought our country was progressing but now, with our current administration, we are regressing.
It was such an uplifting and powerful event. It ended on the best note possible, the passing of HB40 in the Illinois House of Representatives. Gov. Bruce Rauner campaigned saying he believed in a woman’s right to choose, but I think he only meant women who were financially able to afford that right. HB40 is a bill about equality and that all people should be afforded the same access to health care services, including women on Medicaid and state employees.
Yes, state employee insurance doesn’t cover abortion services. Politicians such as Rauner and Peter Roskam are so out of touch with their constituents. Roskam is about to vote to take away health care from millions of people, including preventative services like birth control and cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood. Roskam and Rauner need to take a hard look in the mirror and realize that the person looking back at them is not who they are representing.
