McHenry County Community Foundation awards Family Alliance $13,000 grant

HUNTLEY – Family Alliance Inc. has been chosen as the recipient of an expressive therapy grant from the McHenry County Community Foundation.

The grant money will benefit Family Alliance in Huntley, which provides comprehensive adult day health services in McHenry County.

The nonprofit organization received $13,000 from the McHenry County Community Foundation and $4,000 from an anonymous donor, which will be used to continue providing music and art therapies in Huntley.

The therapies aim to improve an individual’s quality of life, strengthen memory recall, create positive changes in mood, provide a sense of control over life and promote vocal fluency as a supplement to physical rehabilitation. The services are done by trained professionals who are seeking to enhance the quality of life for adults who attend Family Alliance’s Adult Day Health and Memory Care programs.

Music therapy is used for the Parkinson’s group at Family Alliance to help an individual maintain executive functioning, quality of speech, motor skills and physical function.

Family Alliance’s Mneme Therapy uses everyday pleasures such as movement, singing, storytelling and painting to stimulate dramatic brain changes. According to Family Alliance, music and art therapy programs also give professionals another way to reduce people’s dependence on anti-psychotic medications.
