HAMPSHIRE – A 17-year-old Pingree Grove girl was killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday night near Hampshire that sent five other teens from Pingree Grove, Lake in the Hills, Algonquin, Hampshire and Huntley to the hospital, police said.
About 8:20 p.m., Kane County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Dietrich Road between Route 20 and Brier Hill Road in unincorporated Hampshire Township, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
A 2005 Toyota Corolla was traveling east on Dietrich Road and about to go over a hill when it crossed the center line, according to a preliminary investigation, police said. The Toyota Corolla struck a 2005 Ford SUV, causing both vehicles to roll over, police said.
The driver of the Toyota Corolla, Brianna Soto, was pronounced dead at Centegra Hospital – Huntley, police said. On Friday, the McHenry County Coroner’s Office revealed the cause of death to be blunt trauma to the head and abdomen.
The passenger in the car, also a 17-year-old girl from Pingree Grove, was taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.
There were four people in the Ford SUV, including three 16-year-old girls from Lake in the Hills, Algonquin and Hampshire, and a 15-year-old girl from Huntley, police said. All were taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.
The crash is under investigation by Kane County Sheriff’s detectives and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team. No tickets have been issued, but deputies believe that distracted driving might have played a role in the crash, police said.
All subjects were wearing their seat belts, police said.
