Letter: 'Fake' news

To the Editor:

For months, I’ve been troubled by Donald Trump’s attack on the free press. He repeatedly has labeled news that doesn’t please him as “fake news.” He has denigrated well-respected newspapers like The New York Times, news stations like CBS, and chief Washington correspondent for CNN, Jake Tapper. I’ve been concerned that Trump neither honors the First Amendment nor supports facts over opinion (consider his tweets accusing former President Barack Obama of wiretapping Trump Tower).

Now, I believe I understand what Trump is trying to clarify for even the slowest among us; that is, that he is “fake,” and when reporters write about his actions and statements, they are writing about a “fake.” Therefore, they end up with “fake” news. Or, stated another way, “news about a fake.”

Similar examples are these: News concerning Joe Maddon would be “Maddon” news or “news about Maddon.” “Environmental” news would be “news about the environment,” etc.

So, The Donald is correct in this case. The news is “fake” because it provides information about a “fake” – a trickster, a charlatan, a clueless imposter, posing as president of this great country (consider his recent comments about Andrew Jackson and the Civil War).

Sometimes, it just takes me a while to comprehend the obvious.
