CRYSTAL LAKE – The city will host its first aquathon, the only one scheduled anywhere in Illinois, later this summer.
What’s an aquathon, you ask? Think of a triathlon without the bicycle – it’s a mixture of swimming and running.
The inaugural event will be Aug. 6 at Three Oaks Recreation Area, race director Denise Smith said.
Smith, a triathlete, said the event will give local endurance athletes a chance to train and compete in a city event since the city has stopped hosting a triathlon.
Smith said Three Oaks is made for such events. She owns Smith Physical Therapy and Running Academy in Crystal Lake.
“That facility is just amazing. It’s a beautiful facility right in town, and it showcases all the wonderful things about our town,” Smith said.
The event features three options: a 500-meter swim and 5-kilometer run, a 1,500-meter swim and 10-kilometer run, and a 2-mile swim.
Crystal Lake in 2014 and 2015 hosted the Illinois Triathlon Championship, but it balked at bringing it back because of a lack of volunteers at the 2015 event, requiring city staff members to help with traffic control and cleanup. Smith said eliminating the cycling portion made the city much more agreeable to the idea.
Registration for the event is now open. You can register and learn about it at www.claquathon.com.
