High school boys tennis: Marian Central's doubles team win 2 matches on state tourney's 1st day

Marian Central doubles pairing Connor Pivnicka and Sam Reckamp won both of their matches on Thursday’s opening day of the Class 1A state tournament. The Hurricanes’ duo won both of their matches in straight sets to advance to the round of 16, where they will play at Palatine on Friday morning.

“Connor and Sam are fighters they go hard every point and attempt to get every ball back, even if it means diving,” coach Craig Greenwald wrote in an email. “They are truly fun to watch.”

Also staying alive in Class 1A, Marian Central’s Michael Dowling lost his first match but won the next two, advancing to the second day in the consolation bracket. Dowling will play Friday at Hoffman Estates in the third consolation round.

Marian Central’s other state qualifier, Ian Bryzeski won his first match but lost the next two to be eliminated.

No local players advanced out of the first day in the Class 2A tournament.

Jacobs’ Kerwin Chong won his first match but dropped his next two. The Golden Eagles’ doubles pairing of Matthew Kastritis and Winston Yau also suffered the same fate, winning their opener in three sets but losing the next two. Jacobs’ other qualifier, Kyle Burton, went winless in two matches.

Huntley’s doubles team of Jack Soderwall and Jacob Wat also dropped both of their matches.
