3 more suspects charged with first-degree murder in connection with home invasion, shooting

WOODSTOCK – Three additional men have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the May 27 home invasion and slaying of a 52-year-old McHenry man.

Adam Morris, 44, of McCullom Lake and Byron Howard, 36, of Wonder Lake were charged Friday, according to a news release from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. Charles A. Campo, 31, of McHenry was charged Thursday, and Jared J. Fox, 25, of Wonder Lake was charged Wednesday, police said.

Investigators didn’t return calls seeking comment Friday. They haven’t released information about who they believe shot Donald Jouravleff, or if any of the men knew the family who lived in the home in the 1800 block of West Davis Avenue in unincorporated McHenry near the Fox River.

It was not clear Friday whether police were looking for additional suspects. Investigators initially said two masked men were responsible for the shooting.

“I want to publicly thank all the officers involved in this investigation for their tireless efforts in bringing this case toward a final resolution,” Sheriff Bill Prim said in a statement.

In addition to first-degree murder, Campo, Morris and Howard also were charged with home invasion and residential burglary. If convicted of first-degree murder, the men could each face 20 to 60 years in prison.

Campo was being held on $5 million bond. Morris and Howard were being held without bond, according to the news release.

This wasn’t the first time the three men were arrested.

In 2011, Campo was charged with and convicted of unlawful use of a weapon in connection with an arson committed with a Molotov cocktail. He was sentenced to four years in prison in September of that year. At that time, he also was sentenced to 364 days in jail for an unrelated aggravated battery charge of punching a woman in the face and fracturing her jaw during a fight at a party in 2010. The sentence was part of plea deal accepted by Judge Sharon Prather.

Three years later, in 2014, Campo was sentenced to another four years in prison for beating and robbing a man in Lakemoor. In that case, Campo pleaded guilty to robbery, and prosecutors dropped more serious charges as part of a plea deal accepted by Prather, according to court records and Northwest Herald reports.

Howard has pending domestic battery, aggravated assault of a peace office and aggravated battery charges from July, according to court records.

Morris was convicted of armed robbery, possession/use of a weapon/firearm and theft charges from 1996, according to court records. He also has a 2014 domestic battery conviction, court records show.

Police and paramedics responded to a 911 call about 1 a.m. May 27. At the home, they found Jouravleff had been shot and was seriously wounded. Jouravleff later died from complications from a gunshot wound, the McHenry County Coroner’s Office has said.

Additional evidence has been recovered during the investigation, according to the release, and the investigation remains active by the sheriff’s office, McHenry city police and McHenry County Major Investigation Assistance Team.

Anyone with information on the incident or the offenders involved is asked to call the McHenry County Major Investigation Assistance Team Tip Line at 815-363-2201. A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered by McHenry County Crime Stoppers for those who provide information that leads to an arrest.

Campo is next due in court Thursday before Judge Prather.
