Crystal Lake police investigating death after body found in pond near OfficeMax on Route 14

CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lake police released few details regarding the body that was found Monday in a small retention pond in front of OfficeMax, 4429 Route 14.

Police and the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department were called to the scene about 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Crystal Lake police and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the death, according to a news release from Crystal Lake police. It remains an active investigation, police said.

McHenry County Coroner Anne Majewski said in a news release late Monday that an autopsy on the adult man would be performed Tuesday. He has not been identified.

Crystal Lake police said there is no threat to the public but didn’t specify what leads them to believe that is the case.

Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Derek Hyrkas didn’t return a call or email seeking additional information Monday afternoon.

Officers could be seen walking around the pond, and some passers-by drove by and peered out their windows. News helicopters circled in the air above the scene for part of the afternoon.

The body was facedown in the pond. The dead person had on pants, a brown belt and what appeared to be at least one shoe. Mud and water obstructed further details.

About 1:15 p.m., police could be seen putting a body bag into a vehicle. The McHenry County Coroner’s Office couldn’t be reached for comment Monday afternoon.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Fox River Grove, Wonder Lake and Cary fire protection districts and Wauconda Fire District were at the scene with boats, rescue teams and sonar teams.

One Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District boat sat at the edge of the water about 2 p.m.

Fire personnel at the scene would not immediately provide information on the investigation or their role in it.
