The Algonquin Township Highway Department closed a small residential road that sustained significant damage after Wednesday night’s torrential downpour.

Officials on Thursday closed Dennis Avenue to traffic, Highway Commissioner Andrew Gasser said. The road’s culverts have washed out, sinkholes are opening up and the road is cracking.

Dennis Avenue serves a small unincorporated pocket between Algonquin and Lake in the Hills.

“With more rain coming tonight, it is very possible that the road will completely fail by morning,” Gasser said Thursday afternoon.

Dennis Avenue, which connects to Algonquin Road just west of its intersection with Pyott Road, is the sole ingress and egress for about 30 homes, which will not have vehicle access until further notice, Gasser said. While the homes themselves are not flooded, he said, the water has to recede before repair work can begin.

Thunderstorms developed again Thursday night, and there were chances of rain Friday and again on Sunday night into Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
