Coroner IDs man in wheelchair who died after car crash

McHENRY – The McHenry County Coroner's Office has identified the man in a motorized wheelchair who was killed Saturday after being struck by a car in unincorporated McHenry.

William Roy Schmidt, 62, of rural McHenry, died from blunt force trauma to the chest and extremities after the crash, according to a news release from the McHenry County Coroner's Office.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff's Police were called about 1:27 p.m. to the 700 block of Ringwood Road. A 2016 Subaru Forester was traveling east on Ringwood Road when it struck the wheelchair, police said.

Schmidt was transported to Centegra Hospital – McHenry, where he was pronounced dead at 2:35 p.m., according to the news release.

There were no passengers in the Subaru, and seat belts were worn by the driver of the Subaru and the motorized wheelchair, police said.

The driver of the Subaru, a 65-year-old man, was transported to Centegra Hospital – McHenry for minor injuries. The driver is cooperating with the investigation, police said.

Ringwood Road between Meadow Hill Lane and Memory Trail was closed for more than six hours because of the crash.

An investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

Funeral arrangements for Schmidt are pending at Thompson Spring Grove Funeral Home, 8103 Wilmot Road.
