Letter: Hardworking people of Illinois deserve better

To the Editor:

Government officials (elected and appointed, past and present) have been “kicking the can down the road” regarding pensions and school funding for decades. Now we have a “permanent” higher income tax. This same group mishandled funds, can’t stop spending and cannot manage money.

This tax increase will add $5 billion for the 2018 fiscal year. Are we sure this will be properly allocated? Remember when the Illinois Lottery was created in the ‘80s, the revenue was expected to be used for school funding, and all along went into the “general funds.”

Our governor needs to remove layers of duplicated positions. Government officials have been ripping off the people of Illinois for decades. Our governor needs to sit down with all department heads of each county and pinpoint where cuts can and should be made. Whether it is cutting hours or salaries or eliminating positions. I am sure some counties need to be “cleaned out” more than others.

Since we cannot remove Mr. Michael Madigan, the governor needs to find alternatives to give Illinois taxpayers relief. A junk bond rating is only one step away, and that will be a very sad day. And we can thank our government officials for creating that train wreck.
