Letter: 'Old white men' still deserving of respect

To the Editor:

I am surprised the Northwest Herald would print a letter that in its first sentence expresses racism, ageism and sexism by referring disparagingly to “old white men.” Would the Herald have printed the letter if it referred in the same manner to “old black men” or “young Hispanic women?” I certainly hope not.

However, I guess the writer, Helen Torscher, believes we “old white men” are fair game to single out as somehow deserving of disrespect.

This old white man has worked hard, raised a family of four, paid income tax and contributed to Social Security and Medicare since I was 18.

All of us old white, black, Hispanic and Asian men who have done so have earned respect.

What has happened to a civil discussion where the parties involved are courteous, polite and respectful, even when they disagree?
