ALGONQUIN – Bob Van Ness frequently fished in the pond in Lake in the Hills where he was found Tuesday.

Carol Van Ness, his wife of almost 41 years, said he had a passion for fishing. Both Carol and Bob, 63, were native to the northwest suburbs and lived in Algonquin. The two were childhood sweethearts.

“We got together at 16,” Carol said.

She said Bob was a musician and played in many bands throughout his life. He also took interest in what was happening in and around his community. Carol said he liked to dabble in a variety of activities and facets of public life.

“He loved life and loved to be around people,” Carol said. “He cared about what was going on in the community and even the world. He took a special interest in everything.”

Bob expressed that interest by writing letters to the editor throughout his life. Carol said he had been published “years ago.” She added Bob had a great love of his family, which included a son, a daughter and two grandsons.

Bob was found Tuesday morning in a pond at Larsen Park in Lake in the Hills. According to the McHenry County Coroner’s Office, he had an enlarged heart that likely caused him to go into cardiac arrest and fall into the water. It does not appear he drowned.

Carol said the family had seen no indication of Bob’s heart condition.

“He’ll be sorely missed by a lot of people,” she said.

The visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m., with a service at 4 p.m., Sunday at Willow Funeral Home, 1415 W. Algonquin Road, Algonquin.
