ALGONQUIN – The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County and the village of Algonquin will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of a day dedicated to cleaning the Fox River.
It’s Our River Day will be from
1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 16 at Cornish Park, 101 S. Harrison St., Algonquin, according to a news release from the Woodstock-based group.
The day will feature special guests to celebrate the 10th anniversary, including keynote speaker Jeff Mengler, president of the Fox River Ecosystem Partnership; singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Thea Grace Roggenbuck from Algonquin; and local artist June Blunk.
Blunk will host a community painting project where everyone can contribute to creating a river scene on canvas. Free coffee will be supplied by River Bottom Ice Cream Co.
The Sierra Club will provide bags and gloves for shoreline cleanup, and the Illinois Water Trailkeepers from the Illinois Paddling Council and members of the Prairie State Canoeists will participate in an in-river cleanup. The Fox River Jeep Club also will be stationed at Buffalo Park, 1 Alan Drive, Algonquin, for more trash and recycling pickup.
Last year, about 150 people came to the event and picked up items such as beer cans, fishing hooks, wires and bottles from along the river.
The event is free and open to the public. Parking can be found in lots and on the street.
