CRYSTAL LAKE – The race for a seat in Illinois Senate District 32 is heating up with another Republican McHenry County Board member announcing his run for the spot.
John Reinert announced Thursday at the Crystal Lake Metra station that he would be seeking the seat, which is held by state Sen. Pamela Althoff.
Althoff is not seeking re-election, and she was at the announcement in support of Reinert.
“It feels great to have her endorsement,” Reinert said. “She has been a real leader in the area, and I hope to carry on what she’s done.”
Reinert lives in Crystal Lake with his wife, Cassy, and has more than 30 years of experience as a homebuilder and real estate broker in Lake and McHenry counties.
As a builder, he said he has seen the toll on homeowners from rising taxes and the housing recession.
“I’ve sat across the table from people who just don’t know if they can pay their mortgages,” he said. “As a homebuilder, I’ve experienced the devastation brought on the housing market.”
As a senator, he said he hopes to reduce property tax burdens and government mandates that restrain businesses, economic development and home ownership.
“As we are all aware, people are leaving the area to our less tax-burdened neighboring states,” Reinert said. “This weighs very heavily on me, and I want to continue to fight for families and struggling business owners, working toward their rightfully deserved success.”
County Board member Craig Wilcox also announced he is running for the seat last week.
