JOHNSBURG – The village of Johnsburg is under contract to buy Chapel Hill Golf Course in hopes of preserving open, recreational space, according to a news release from the village.
Chapel Hill Golf Course, 2500 N. Chapel Hill Road, is nearly 100 acres, and the village plans to continue its use as a golf course.
“Revenues derived from the lease will be used to pay back the note secured to acquire the property,” the news release said.
Lake Forest-based Swanson Development LLC proposed a plan to McHenry officials in July to turn the site into an assisted-living center for people with autism and other development disabilities, such as Down syndrome.
The center would have offered up to 54 assisted-living units for people with autism and a 23,000-square-foot vocational training center, according to planning documents.
The proposal prompted Johnsburg to move forward with buying the space, according to the release.
“The village’s goal is to provide a golf course facility that is well-maintained yet affordable for our residents while protecting an important recreational, open space, which serves our community,” Johnsburg Village President Ed Hettermann said.
The purchase price was not available Saturday.
