VOLO – A suspect driving a vehicle stolen from the Volo area last week crashed into a semitrailer Tuesday night in Volo and fled the scene, police said.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies on patrol about 10 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Four Seasons Boulevard and West Sullivan Lake Road in Lakemoor noticed a 2013 Nissan Altima that had been reported stolen from a Volo residence Sept. 5 and attempted to stop the driver, Lake County Sheriff’s Sgt. Christopher Covelli said.

The driver of the Nissan refused to stop, and the deputy eventually abandoned his efforts to pull over the car, Covelli said.

“Due to the driver’s refusal to pull over and the risk to other motorists, the sheriff’s deputy discontinued his attempt to stop the stolen vehicle,” a news release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office stated.

Less than a minute later, the same deputy observed a collision between the same Nissan Altima and a semitrailer at the intersection of Route 12 and West Molidor Road in Volo.

Covelli said a preliminary investigation showed the truck was traveling north through a green light on Route 12 when the eastbound Nissan disobeyed a red light and collided with it. Witnesses said they then saw the driver of the Nissan run south from the scene of the incident through a wooded area.

At that point, additional Lake County Sheriff’s deputies established a perimeter to attempt to locate the suspect, and K-9 units from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Palatine Police Department were brought to the scene.

Police were able to track the suspect south, but lost the suspect a quarter- to half-mile south of the scene of the crash, Covelli said. Police searched for the suspect for about three hours.

Covelli said he could not provide any information about the suspect at this time, citing the ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the driver’s whereabouts is asked to call the Lake County Sheriff’s Office at 847-549-5200 or Lake County Crime Stoppers at 847-662-2222.

The semitrailer driver, a 50-year-old man from Troy, Missouri, was not injured in the crash, and northbound Route 12 was closed until about 2:30 a.m. because debris and oil spilled in the roadway needed to be cleaned up.

Fox Lake police, Wauconda police, Lake Villa police, Lakemoor police, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Palatine police assisted the Lake County Sheriff’s Office at the scene.
