Woodstock 2, Woodstock North 1: Woodstock forward Caleb Warmbier’s alert play helped keep the Blue Streaks unbeaten in a 2-1 victory over Woodstock North on Wednesday in their Kishwaukee River Conference soccer game.
Thunder goalkeeper Mitch Ahrens had blocked a shot with less than 2 minutes remaining, and most players thought the ball, lying near the end line, was out of bounds.
Although most players stopped play, Warmbier kept going, retrieved the ball and knocked in the game-winner. Streaks coach Matt Warmbier said the officials conferred after the goal and confirmed the ball had not gone out of bounds.
“It was kind of a crazy, weird play,” Matt Warmbier said. “It’s a credit to [Caleb Warmbier] for keeping playing.”
Woodstock (12-0 overall, 5-0 KRC) did not lead until Warmbier’s goal. The Thunder (2-6, 2-4) grabbed the lead with 20 minutes remaining in the second half on Jesus Sanchez’s goal off an assist from Bartek Scheibe.
Woodstock tied the score on Brian Rico’s goal from an Oscar Escorza assist with 9 minutes to go.
Johnsburg 9, Marengo 1: At Marengo, Dean Wiersum recorded a hat trick for the Skyhawks in a win over Marengo.
MJ Alvarez added two goals and an assist. Will Conroy scored one goal and had five assists for Johnsburg. Cody Dschida, Mauro Acosta and Michael Grunder each scored a goal in the game.
