Letter: Why we stand for the national anthem

To the Editor:

I am an 83-year-old woman who was hardly educated to what the American Flag or National Anthem meant. So I decided last July 4 to investigate and found a website by Dudley Rutherford – flagrespect.com “The Accurate Story behind the Star Spangled Banner and our American Flag.” I suggest others check it out.

I am saddened about well-paid ball players kneeling in protest when our National Anthem is sung or played. Their political opinions should not be shown on national television.

I think President Donald Trump is correct when he says, “The issue of kneeling has nothing to do with race. It is about respect for our country, flag and National Anthem, NFL must respect this!”

I think most Americans were never educated about what really happened at Fort McHenry. Probably, because as children that would have been terrible to teach the horrible happenings.

So, I hope my research from this website can inform people about why we “Stand and be respectful.” I ask everyone who is reading this passes it on – I have.
