Thumbs-down: To the McHenry Area Jaycees Haunted House being canceled for the 2017 season because of the lack of fire sprinklers at Knox Park barn. Installing the sprinklers in the city of McHenry owned-building would have cost an estimated $30,000.
We understand the city’s decision, and agree the safety of residents comes first, but we wish the Jaycees could have found another location for the 2017 season, or raised enough money to install sprinklers.
We hope the Jaycees find a new, safer space for the 2018 season, so people can continue to enjoy the 30-plus year tradition.
Thumbs-up: To educating future workers about careers in manufacturing. Dozens of local manufacturing and trades industry companies filled the McHenry East High School gym during the second annual Manufacturing Trade and Industry Expo on Wednesday night in a push to get young people involved in the manufacturing trade.
We support these efforts and many others like them. We hope to see them continue. Manufacturing is changing, but it continues to be a major part of the McHenry County economy. As manufacturing jobs evolve, we hope students are prepared for the new challenges these jobs will bring.
Thumbs-down: To Bears inside linebacker Danny Trevathan, whose illegal blow to the head sent Green Bay Packers receiver Davante Adams to the hospital Thursday evening.
Trevathan’s hit was everything football coaches are trying to teach players to avoid at every level of the sport.
Not only did Trevathan lead with the crown of his helmet, but Adams already had been wrapped up by other defenders well short of the line to gain on third down. Trevathan was flagged for unnecessary roughness and almost certainly will receive a hefty fine from the NFL in the coming days.
Thumbs-up: To cooler weather. Summer, it’s been great, but we’re ready for something different. Temperatures hotter than 90 degrees are fine in July and August, even in the beginning of September, but it is autumn now. Kids are back in school. Let’s be reasonable. We can deal with 70s. Just not 90s at this time of year.
