FOX RIVER GROVE – An abandoned cottage was destroyed in a fire Thursday night in Fox River Grove.

The fire began about 6 p.m. at a cottage, 321 Violet Ave., that has been abandoned for 20 years and was destroyed in the fire, Fox River Grove Deputy Fire Chief Eldee Jackson said.

No one was inside the cottage, and the Fox River Grove Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire.

The fire was out in about 30 minutes. Fire crews from Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Cary, Crystal Lake, Huntley, Marengo, Woodstock, McHenry, Nunda Township, Spring Grove, Wonder Lake and Barrington Countryside responded.

“The cottage was no more than 1,000 square feet, but it was in a rural area, so we needed extra water tanks,” Jackson said.
