WOODSTOCK – The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office has released more details on a three-vehicle crash that occurred Tuesday afternoon in Woodstock.

Two women were taken to area hospitals in critical condition after the crash on Route 176.

A Chevrolet heavy-duty pickup truck, a Lexus and a Honda Civic crashed head-on about 3:30 p.m. on Route 176 west of Dean Street in unincorporated Dorr Township, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The driver of the Lexus, a 59-year-old Marengo woman, and her passenger, a 37-year-old Marengo woman, initially were taken to Centegra Hospital – Huntley in critical condition.

The 37-year-old later was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. The 59-year-old was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, police said.

Two helicopters from Flight for Life were requested, but only one was available, Woodstock Fire Capt. Scott Neiman said.

A 17-year-old Hampshire boy, the driver of the Chevrolet, and his passenger, a 25-year-old Elgin man, were taken to Centegra Hospital – Huntley in good condition, according to the release.

The driver of the Honda, a 47-year-old Harvard woman, was treated and released from the scene.

A preliminary investigation shows that the Chevrolet driver was traveling east on Route 176 when he crossed into the westbound lane for unknown reasons, striking the Honda and then hitting the Lexus head-on.

Two of the vehicles had substantial front-end damage, and the third had minor damage, Neiman said.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor, and charges are pending, according to the release.

Seat belts were worn by occupants in the Honda and Lexus, and it is unknown whether those of the Chevrolet were wearing seat belts.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Lakewood police, the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District and the Marengo Rescue Squad responded to the crash, which resulted in a four-hour road closure.
