To the Editor:
McHenry Middle School started a new Golf Club. An adventure for 40. With the help of many people, organizations and local golf groups, the club was a wonderful success. Jeff Varda from a local group of McHenry golfers was the lead person. Boone Creek Golf Club was very cooperative in allowing the children to come over for field trips to work on skills. Boone Creek sponsored 30 children to participate in a final nine-hole golf outing. We had many local city residents be caddies/mentors for the outing.
Thank you to Mayor Wayne Jett, state Sen. Pam Althoff, Tim Jacobs, Ron Jania, Mike Murphy, Scott Link, The Kallas’s and several high school golfers walked with the kids. McHenry High School golf coaches: Ryan Ellison, Mike Hurckes and Sean Stermer and 10 high school golfers assisted the children on trips over to Boone Creek.
McHenry Country Club allowed us to borrow the indoor putting green and some driving/chipping pads.
Mikayla Mika from the Kids Golf Foundation was wonderful. The Golf Foundation, through a grant, allowed each student the use of youth clubs for practice. Each student received from the foundation a polo shirt, a hat, tees, ball marker and a sleeve of brand-new balls for the golf outing. Each student who did not own a set of clubs, was allowed to keep the clubs after the golf outing (which was a great surprise for the children). Next year, we will be “driving” for more golfing opportunities.
