High school girls tennis: Woodstock North's Cullotta, Jacobs' Steinkamp, Skepnek advance in consolation brackets

Woodstock North sophomore Aly Cullotta won her first match at the IHSA Class 1A girls tennis state finals Thursday in Buffalo Grove. Cullotta defeated Olivia Hamm of Wheaton Academy, 7-5, 6-2, in the opening round of the singles bracket.

Cullotta then lost to Chicago Northside’s Nicole Roc in the second round, 6-1, 6-0. She rebounded for a win in the consolation bracket against Centralia’s Michelle Lynch, 6-1, 6-1, to finish her day at 2-1 overall.

Cullotta will play Friday in the consolation third round against Amaya Fernandes of Normal University High.

The only other local athletes to win their first match at state were Johnsburg’s Abbie Cittadino and Kamile Aleksaite in the Class 1A doubles bracket. The duo beat Lily Olthof and Haleigh Olthof of Illiana Christian, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1, in the opening round.

Cittadino and Aleksaite then lost to Kaitlyn Larson and Alyssa Guse of Rockford Lutheran, 7-6 (3), 6-0. They lost their first match in the consolation bracket to finish the tournament 1-2.

IHSA Class 2A state finals: Jacobs' top doubles pair and FVC doubles champions Haley Steinkamp and Kylie Skepnek lost their opening match, 6-4, 6-1, to Tiffany Zhang and Kavya Rachapalli of Naperville North. Steinkamp and Skepnek rebounded with a pair of victories in the consolation bracket to finish the day 2-1.

The Golden Eagles duo advances in the consolation bracket to Friday to face O’Fallon’s Miley Brunner and Kate Macaluso in the consolation third round.

Jacobs sophomore singles player Lindsay Cunningham lost her opening match against Wheaton North’s Madeline Fidel, 6-0, 6-1. She won her first match in the consolation bracket and lost her second, finishing at 1-2 for the tournament.

Huntley, fresh of a sectional team title, had two doubles pairs competing. Each lost its opening-round match. Alex Landman and Kayley Roche lost to Catherine O’Regan and Samantha Frishman of Glenbrook North, 6-0, 6-0. Landman and Roche lost their first consolation match.

Huntley’s Allison Simons and Merritt Whiteside lost to Fremd’s Kate Bodensteiner and Julia Smiarowska in the opening round. Simons and Whiteside also lost their first consolation match.

Also in Class 2A, Cary-Grove junior Bethany Marshall, the FVC singles champion, lost her first match, 6-0, 6-2, to Ivvy Hicks of St. Ignatius College Preps. Marshall lost her first match in the consolation bracket.

C-G doubles pair Elizabeth Barrett and Katie Sowa lost their opening match to Shelby Thomas and Emiara Saini of St. Charles North. Barrett and Sowa also lost their first consolation match.
